Historical Fiction

Listed below are actual names discovered from a wide variety of sources (antebellum novels, diaries, poems and articles) from the antebellum period.  These are real names of people living during antebellum times  from Europe to America in no particular order, however, they are loosely organized by alphabet so you may peruse and adopt unique as well as traditional character names for your novel.

As you will see, Hebrew and Biblical names were prevalent during the more religiously conscious antebellum period.  When possible at totally random moments, the origin of the name is provided.

Biblical names and the names of heroes were popular choices of many parents, although they also usually named children after family members. Since Wilson is a Scottish or Scots-Irish surname, you might use some names popular with Scots: Archie (for Archibald), Hugh, Lochlan, and Neil. Some other 19th-century names I’ve run across that certainly aren’t popular today include Asa and Gideon.

Some parents also gave their sons the names of popular heroes: Andrew Jackson, George Washington, and Lafayette were popular names for American boys in the early part of the 19th century.
